Let’s take a quick look at the endangered species list

of the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature).
According to the latest list, released on 29 January 2010, there are 5220 endangered species (2754 Animalia, 1 Fungi, 2464 Plantae, 1 Protista).

That’s not so much if you take in account that The National Science Foundation’s “Tree of Life” project estimates that there could be anywhere from 5 million to 100 million species on the planet, but science has only identified about 2 million.
